Abstract

Muḥammad bin Umar al-Wāqidī is one of the prominent biographers of the prophet Muḥammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrations reported by him in his book of Maghāzī and other sources such as al-ṭabaqāt of ibn  Sa'd and al-ṭabarī have been criticized and al- Wāqidī have been labled as ghair thiqah (unauthentic) and Ḍaīf for various reasons. But the fact is different. In fact, the majority of those who raised objections to al-Wāqidī are also convinced that he is a pioneer of Maghāzī or Imam al Maghāzī. Also all his critics accept him as Ḥujjat in Maghāzī. Therefore, weighing the objections against al-Wāqidī in the balance of al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil is necessary. This paper seeks to critically evaluate the allegations raised against al-Wāqidī as "Rāvī" (narrator) in the light of Asma-al-Rijāl books and the sources of his biography.
