Abstract

This article explores the present condition of Pakistani prisons regarding the rehabilitation and reformation of criminals. It is observed that a criminal after spending his prison’s period again commits crime in society that shows deficiencies in rehabilitation and reformation systems of prisons. The objective is to suggest recommendations to improve religious segment of reformation of criminals. For this purpose, the existed religious syllabus and relevant activities of prisons are analyzed. This is qualitative research and data is gathered from primary and secondary sources. Primary sources include surveys of different prisons in the province Punjab and secondary sources include books, articles and online sources. The recommendations of this study can be applied in other provinces of Pakistan because there is similar religious reformation system across Pakistani prisons. The study suggests that religious syllabus of prisons can be improved by adding more contents from Qur’an and Hadith about different crimes as well as reward and punishment in hereafter. To accept reformation during imprisonment, willingness is the foremost condition and willingness usually considered as coming from religious education. Furthermore, renowned religious scholars should be invited in prisons because criminals show their keen interest in participating in religious programmes. Religious officers should be appointed in every prison to preach inmates.
