Difference of Exegetists: Its Causes and Principles (Analytical Study)

Abstract

It is evident that there is difference of opinions assumed by the exegetists in their exegetical work. Now the question is that what are the principles led them to defer from others in dealing with the meaning of the Holy Quran. There are two sorts of differences: one that is not only permissible but in some cases it is inevitable to reach a decisive outcome. It is common among Quranic commentators based on different factors in their commentaries. For instance, if the difference of views is on the reason that a word denotes several meanings, so to opt one of these meanings as a point of view will create a difference among exegetists. So as the ambiguity in adjective or in any statement will lead commentators to choose one of the expected and permissible viewpoints. The second sort of differences is that which is adopted on the basis of religious or any other biasness or false and rejected creed or baseless argument. These kinds of factors for taking on different opinions are not allowed rather they are condemned by the majority of scholars. The study aims to explore the principles and rules of difference of opinions among the exegetists in their exegetical works and to analyze the principles and rules on the basis of which they differ from the others.
