Abstract

Islam is a complete code of law and life. It has two basic sources and foundations: the Qur’an and the Sunnah. It is the clear fountain from which religious issues and the teachings of Islam are derived. The Holy Qur’an is a book based on Allah's principles and rules, and for the sake of explaining these principles, Allah has inspired His last Prophet Muhammad  (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). If Islam is based solely on Qur’an, then many rules cannot be practised in religion. For example, the Qur'an has ordered to establish prayer but did not mention its times and procedures and all other details. We have to consult the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for the explanation and interpretation of this important pillar of Islam. In this article the views of Ibn Qayyim have been discussed and analyzed. In this regard, Ibn Qayyim has recorded his opinion that the Sunnah cannot be separated from The Holy Qur’an in any case. He has categorized the hadiths into three types in relation with Qur’an. These three types have been discussed in this article with detail.
