Abstract

One of the important branches of Qur’ānic Sciences is the study of al-Wujūh wa al-Nazāʾir. It deals with those words in the Qur’an that appear in different contexts due to the multiplicity of referents. The words whose meanings change depending on the context are called Wujūh (Homonyms), while the words that occur at multiple places with the same meaning are called Nazāʾir (Synonyms). There are various words in the Qur’ān that are used as homonyms and synonyms, among them al-Insān. The aim of this study is to examine the Qur’ānic term al-Insān by identifying where its usages share common meanings/ referents and where they differ across contexts. For the purpose, al-Jāmiʿ li-Aḥkām al-Qurʾān by Imam Qurṭubī, Madārik al-Tanzīl wa Ḥaqāʾiq al-Taʾwīl by Allama Nasfī, Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-ʿAẓīm by Imam Ibn Kathīr, and al-Durr al-Manthūr fī al-Tafsīr bi-l-Maʾthūr by Allama Suyūṭī have been selected for analytical study.
