Abstract
Maulvi Abdul Haq, a mentor, a scholar and a linguist, is popularly known as "Baba-e-Urdu". Held in high esteem amongst intellectuals, educationalists and scholars, Baba-e-Urdu is praised for his work in promoting Urdu as a unifying medium. His entire life was dedicated for the development, survival and conservation of Urdu language. He put his heart and soul for the uplift of Anjuman Taraqqi-e-Urdu, an intellectual organization. Today, Urdu, Anjuman Taraqqi-e-Urdu and Maulvi Abdul Haq are considered synonymns. When the cause of the Anjuman was severely damaged by his own nominees, Baba-e-Urdu, on April 2, 1959, wrote a letter to General Muhammad Ayub Khan requesting him to save the Anjuman. The Chief Martial Law Administrator of Pakistan issued Martial Law Order No.21 on October 9, 1959. This act of the President was greatly lauded by the academia and literary circles as well as by the national newspapers and journals; declaring it a timely and appropriate action for the improvement and reformation of the affairs of Anjuman Taraqqi-e-Urdu. This article attempts to encompass all these events.
