Abstract
Ghalib's poetry has fascinated the readers for the last two hundred years. During his time he had his detractors and admirers. But after his death his popularity has kept increasing, and now he is universally acclaimed as one of the greatest Urdu poets. Many critics and admirers have been explaining and elucidating the poetical characteristics and merits of his verses. In this paper the thesis has been put forward that one of the basic reasons for the popularity of his poetry is that he uses the finest techniques of storytelling and shorty story writing in his verses.The finest of his couplets are indeed an example of narrating a story in the best poetical way, using the traditional characters of the Ghazal and employing the symbolic and metaphoric technique.
