Stanley Lean-Poole as A Translator of The Holy Qur'ān
Abstract
Stanley Lane-Poole was a British orientalist, translator, lexicographer and historian. He completed the remaining two volumes of "An Arabic-English Lexicon" started by his grand-uncle Edward William Lane (1801-1876) in which he has translated some fragments of the Holy Qur'ān. He edited the Lane's book entitled "Selections from the Kur-an" and published it alongwith his own additions. Lane-Poole published "The Speeches and Table-Talk of the Prophet Mohammad" translating selected extracts from the Holy Qur'ān and Ḥadīth therein. In 1882, Lane-Poole published his French book "Le Koran: sa Poesie et ses lois" (The Qur'ān: Its Poetry and Laws). This article examines Lane-Poole's works on the Qur'ān critically comparing them with other English translations.
