‘Awārif-ul-Ma'ārif’ By Shaykh Shahabuddīn al-Suharwardī and its Impacts on Mystic Maktūbāt

Abstract

This article traces out the impacts of the book ‘Awārif-al-Ma’ārif’ by Shaykh Shihabuddīn al-Suharwardī on the mystic literature especially on Maktūbāt (letters) of the mystics of sub-continent. These mystics read and followed this book and simultaneously quoted from it in their Maktūbāt (letters) and writings. Deep impacts of 'Awārif' are easily noticeable in Maktūbāt of Mystics, especially in Maktūbāt of Sheikh Sharf-ad-Din Yaḥya Manirī, Sheikh Abdul Qudūs Gangohī and Shaykh Ahmad Sarhindī. These writings demonstrate that the mystics in the sub-continent studied this book very keenly and it influenced their personalities and writings deeply. In this article, the biography of the author, the rank of the book and its impact on mystic Maktūbāt has been analyzed and discussed with examples from their literature. In the present age of materialism, teachings of these mystics especially those of the book ‘Awārif-Al-Ma’ārif’ promise riddance from chaos and extremism.
