Abstract

  1. "Euthanasia" (in medical terminology) means terminating a very sick patient’s life prematurely in order to relieve him from extremely painful suffering. In this Paper I have tried to throw light on Euthanasia and its related matters like forms, glossaries and views of different Islamic scholars on the subject. Euthanasia is divided into two parts; one is active and other is passive. In plain words Active Euthanasia means immediate killing of a patient by using poison etc whereas Passive Euthanasia denotes killing of a patient through non-provision of necessary medical treatment. There is Ijma that Active Euthanasia is absolutely un-Islamic however on Passive Euthanasia, opinions are different amongst Muslim scholars. A study of both schools of thoughts reveals that aim of two groups of Western thinkers are one and the same that such incurable patients must be killed although their way of finishing them are different. One group favors’ instant death whereas the other is slow moving. When I judge the above said Western thoughts in the light of Islamic Principles it transpires that Islam is a very optimistic religion and it stresses proper treatment even for incurable patients and does recommends death by either way. Declaring a patient "incurable" is a controversy even in medical Science; hence killing of a patient on ground of incurable would be a heinous offense.
