Methods of Arabic interpretations in the subcontinent: a typological study

Abstract

The Holy Quran has always been the mark of attention for Muslims. Since always, they have been reciting holy verses of Quran, pondering over it and following the teachings. This process continued in every era. When any verse used to befall then companions (R. A) of Prophet (PBUH) used to ask for explanation and interpretation from Holy Prophet (PBUH). Companions (R. A) of Prophet (PBUH) built schools for the publication and publicity of explanation of Holy Quran, after the death of Prophet (PBUH). Centers of Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas' (R. A) in Makkah and Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood's (R. A) in Koofah, got fame. Mujahid, Atta, Hasan Basri and Masrooq (R. A) got great reputation from these centers. In this way, all sayings of Tafseer were secured by Followers (Taabi'een). Explanations of Quran evolved more in Taabi'een's era. Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair (R. A) composed a book named as "Tafseer-e-Atta", in the same duration. Ulama of subcontinent also made contributions in the continuation of Tafseer e Quran. For this purpose, they composed different publications in Arabic, Persian, English, Hindi, Urdu and different local languages. Treasure of Tafseer can't be covered in this dissertation. That's why, we'll talk on those Arabic tafaseer of Subcontinent which are complete.
