Abstract

Muhammad bin Umar al-Wāqidī is one of the permanent biographers of the prophet Muḥammad (upon whom be peace and greeting). The narrations reported by him in his book of Maghāzī and other sources such as al-ṭabaqāt of ibn Sa'd and al-ṭabarī have been criticised, and al- Wāqidī has been labled as ghair thiqah (unauthentic) and Ḍaīf for various reasons. But the fact is different. This paper seeks to critically evaluate the allegations raised against al-Wāqidī as "rāvī" in the light of rijāl books and the sources of his biography.
