Abstract

Abstract The Holy Quran is known for its eloquence and rhetoric but this aspect is often ignored or neglected. This article is an attempt to highlight this aspect. Muhassanaate-lafzee (the qualities and advantages of a word) is, in fact, a sub branch of Rhetoric or Ilm-ul-Badee. Ilm-ul-Badee is a kind of Eloquence (Balaaghat). This branch of rhetoric underlines the qualities and advantages associated with a word and its use. It also underscores its reasons and rationale. This article focusses on the Muhassanaat-eLafzee used and found in Surah Al-Kahf of the Holy Quran. At the same time it explains their rationale. It quotes the verse of the Quran which contains a Muhassan-e-Lafzee and then analyses it giving emphasis to the shades and implied meanings (connotations) with their logic. This attempt will help the serious reader of the Holy Quran to have a deeper and fuller comprehension and appreciation of the meanings of the Holy Quran. A study of the science of Quranic Rhetoric makes the reading of the Holy Quran a more fascinating and beneficent experience. It also helps to catch a glimpse of the broader spectrum and profundity of the Quranic teachings.
