AN OVERVIEW OF JURISPRUDENTIAL OPINIONS ON THE SANCTITY OF IN-LAW RELATIONSHIPS

Abstract

This article traces out the respect and sanctity regarding in-law
relationships according to Qur’an, Ḥadīth and Muslim jurisprudential
opinions. Our social life revolves around kinship and in-law relationships;
thus, every individual is chained in these relations. After marriage, some
new relationships are established. These relationships make one family
closer to the other. Men should keep safe distance from women's female
relatives after marriage according to Islamic Shariah. Similarly, women
should keep safe distance from men's male relatives, but in modern times,
such sanctity is being violated that is disturbing family lives. So, there is a
need to propagate awareness on this specific subject. This is a novel
research in this regard. It is an analysis of the views of the four Imams on
the sanctity regarding in-law relationships. Islam commands for sanctity
and respect of in-laws. The Islamic Ideological Council and Federal
Shariah Court should propose new legislations in this regard in view of
Islamic teachings. Muslim society can have peaceful and noble family
relationships in order to act upon divine commandments regarding sanctity
and respect of in-laws. We should not import foreign culture about
disrespect of in-laws through media in our societies.
